The Photo League, founded by Berenice Abbot, Gene Smith, Paul Strand and others in New York City in 1936, was devoted to socially commited, documentary work. The league sponsored numerous classes and exhibitions during it's 15-year history, influencing an entire generation to appreciate photography's potential and power for truth and social justice.
